BMI In The Press

Daily Herald: Cook Businesses Join In Tax Struggle

"And a property-tax consultant...Sandy Bornstein, said she's had several clients leave Cook to avoid the high bills. Some moved far away, but one, an Elk Grove Village firm...cut its tax bill by $20,000 by moving from the Cook side to the DuPage side of Devon Avenue."

Crain's Small Business: County Property Taxes Have Real Appeal

"'The description of the property is not right in about 10 to 15 percent of the cases,' says Sandy Bornstein of...BMI Property Tax Reduction Inc., which helps businesses appeal their taxes."

Crain's Chicago Business: O'Hare Commerce Group Assesses Its Future

"[In 1992] the association introduced a property tax analysis service to help members figure out if they're being assessed incorrectly, and thus overpaying on their taxes. The program, rare among Chicago-area commerce associations, is offered through a GOA subsidiary, the Greater O'Hare Services Corp. 'We had a number of (tax) queries from members,' says Roger Baum, volunteer director of the service corporation for the past four years. ... Actually providing the tax service is BMI Property Tax Reduction.... Vice-president Fred Bornstein says it's not unusual for industrial properties to be significantly, if inadvertently, misrepresented by tax assessors. 'We had a case where somebody had six acres of land and it was entered as 60 acres,' he recalls. More frequent and less dramatic is the fact that tax assessments have increased on industrial properties without a concurrent rise in land values. In one instance, according to Mr. Bornstein, a property was assessed at $110 per square foot, while neighboring properties were assessed at $60 to $70 per square foot. When there's a valid case, he says, he frequently can win a reduction of 20% to 30%."
